Have you ever wondered why the moon phases play such a huge role in witchcraft? Meet the Triple Moon Goddess. She is thought of as one being, symbolizing the divine feminine, but is broken down into three parts. These are known as the Mother, the Maiden, and the Crone.
The Maiden is the first symbolizing youth and new beginnings. She is also associated with the waxing cresent moon. She can also be connected to Artemis who represents the hunt, wilderness, and independence.
The Mother is the second, symbolizing fertility, nurturing, and fullness. This is why she is associated with the full moon. The full moon generally means full power. This is why most powerful spells are conducted on a full moon as well as why the full moon is used to charge our witchcraft objects such as crystals, wands, and athames. She can also be connected to Selene who embodies the full moon itself and its nurturing qualities.
The Crone is the last of the cycle, symbolizing death and wisdom. She can also be associated with Hecate, the goddess of witchcraft and the embodiment of death. This is why skulls, such as cat skulls, are found on Hecate's alters. Some witches even have preserved whole specimens such as snakes on their Hecate alters, myself included.
Just as life needs birth, maturity, and death, so does witchcraft.
